The Tibetan Community in USA

The United States is home to the largest Tibetan diaspora outside South Asia, with over 26,700 Tibetan Americans estimated by the Central Tibetan Administration in 2020. Tibetans came to America in waves most significantly after the US Immigration Act of 1990 granted 1,000 immigrant visas, followed by family reunification that transformed a small refugee community into a thriving nationwide network across 22 cluster communities. Today, Tibetan Americans are found from New York to California, with the largest concentrations in the Northeast, the Great Lakes, and the Mountain West.

The heartbeat of American Tibetan life is Jackson Heights in Queens, New York City home to roughly 13,000 Tibetans and sometimes called “Little Tibet.” Its streets are lined with Tibetan restaurants, dharma centres, thangka shops, and community gathering spaces. The Tibetan Community of New York and New Jersey (TCNYNJ)the oldest Tibetan organisation in the US — runs weekend language and performing arts classes for children aged 5–18 every Saturday. The Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota (TAFM), founded in 1992, serves the Twin Cities’ community of around 3,000 the second largest in the US running a Tibetan culture school, performing arts programme, and mentorship initiatives. The Office of Tibet in New York represents the CTA and coordinates diaspora affairs.

Across the country, local Tibetan associations organise Losar celebrations, March 10 Uprising Day marches, Saga Dawa observances, and dharma teachings. Cities including Boston, Chicago, Seattle, Minneapolis, and Washington DC each have active Tibetan communities that hold annual festivals, maintain dharma centres, and run weekend language schools keeping the next generation connected to their heritage. The US has also been a strong political advocate for Tibet — passing the historic Resolve Tibet Act in 2024.
