Germany has been a home for Tibetan refugees since the late 1970s, and today its Tibetan community numbering around 2,000–3,000 is spread across cities including Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Cologne. Germany holds a special place in Tibetan hearts: its parliament (Bundestag) was among the first Western legislatures to formally pass resolutions in support of Tibet, and the country has consistently advocated for Tibetan human rights at the UN Human Rights Council.
Community life revolves around the Tibetan Weekend School in Munich, where children gather every Saturday to learn Tibetan language, history, and cultural arts a lifeline for preserving identity across generations. In Berlin, the Tibetan community hosts regular cultural events, Losar celebrations, and March 10 Uprising Day commemorations, drawing together hundreds of Tibetans from across the country. The International Campaign for Tibet Germany, based in Berlin, is one of the most active Tibet advocacy organisations in Europe, and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation has supported the Tibetan cause since 1991.
Hamburg is home to the Tibetisches Zentrum Hamburg, founded in 1977 by the late Geshe Thubten Ngawang the first Tibetan Buddhist centre in the German speaking world. It continues to offer dharma teachings, meditation courses, and cultural programmes open to both Tibetans and the broader public. Germany’s Tibetans are deeply engaged in advocacy, culture, and community a small but tenacious presence in the heart of Europe.
Tibetisches Zentrum Hamburg, founded in 1977, is the oldest Tibetan Buddhist center in Germany and one of the most important in Europe. It serves as a major hub for Tibetan Buddhist study, meditation, and cultural preservation. The center hosts regular teachings by visiting lamas, multi-week courses on Buddhist philosophy, and community events celebrating Tibetan culture.
