Sweden is home to one of the Nordic region’s most organised Tibetan communities, centred on Stockholm. The Tibetan Community in Sweden (Tibetanska Gemenskapen i Sverige) was formed in 1999 to bring Tibetans across the country together, preserve language and tradition, and pass Tibetan culture on to a new generation born in Scandinavia. Alongside it, the Swedish Tibet Committee (Svenska Tibetkommittén) has campaigned for Tibet and human rights for decades, making Sweden a long-standing centre of Tibet solidarity in northern Europe.
The community gathers each year for Losar, His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s birthday and the 10 March commemoration of the Tibetan National Uprising, most often in Stockholm. Tibetan Buddhism also has deep roots in Sweden through centres such as Yeshin Norbu and Drom Tönpa, where Swedish and Tibetan practitioners study and practise together. Though spread across a large country, Sweden’s Tibetans maintain a close-knit cultural and religious life.
Sweden’s Tibetan calendar runs from Losar celebrations and 10 March commemorations in Stockholm to Buddhist teachings, meditation evenings and cultural gatherings around the country. Whether you are looking for a community festival, a teaching by a visiting lama or a Tibet solidarity event, tibetanevents.com brings Sweden’s Tibetan events together in one place — and as the community grows, this page will grow with it.
