The Tibetan community in Switzerland is the largest in Europe and the third largest globally after India and the United States. The first wave of around 1,000 Tibetan refugees arrived between 1961 and 1963, after Switzerland became one of the first Western nations to formally welcome them following the Dalai Lama’s flight from Tibet. The Kuhn family of Rikon in the Töss valley offered them work in their metalworks factory and helped establish what would become the Tibet Institute Rikon in 1968 the only Tibetan monastery outside Asia founded under the direct guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Today around 8,000 Tibetans live across Switzerland, concentrated in the German-speaking cantons of Zürich, Winterthur, and the Töss valley, with additional communities in Bern, Basel, and Geneva. The community is organised under the Tibetan Community in Switzerland & Liechtenstein (TCSL), which runs 20 weekend Tibetan language and cultural schools across both countries. In September 2024, over 430 students gathered in Zürich to celebrate the 9th Tibetan Language Day, participating in calligraphy competitions, poetry recitation, and cultural debates. The schools hold an annual summer camp in 2024 it was held at the Rigpa International Centre in Niederwangen, Bern where students immerse themselves in Tibetan language and culture for a full week. The Tibet Bureau in Geneva serves as the official representative office of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) for Europe, coordinating advocacy, cultural events, and community support across the continent.
Tibet Institute Rikon (Klösterliches Tibet-Institut) is the spiritual heart of the Tibetan community in Switzerland. Founded in 1968 in the small village of Rikon in the Töss valley, it was established on behalf of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and stands as the only Tibetan monastery in the Western world founded under his direct guidance. The monastery is home to a small community of monks who lead daily prayers, host teachings by visiting lamas, and welcome thousands of visitors each year.
Switzerland hosts a growing calendar of Tibetan events from Losar celebrations and Saka Dawa observances to teachings by visiting lamas, Tibetan music concerts, film screenings, and community festivals. Whether you’re new to Tibetan culture or a long-time member of the diaspora, you’ll find Tibetan culture, festivals, concerts, teachings, workshops and community gatherings across Switzerland all in one place.
