The Tibetan Community in Austria

Austria’s Tibetan community is smaller but steadily growing, centred primarily in Vienna, with a number of families also settled in Graz, Salzburg, and Innsbruck. Tibetans began arriving in Austria through humanitarian and family reunification channels in the 1980s and 1990s, and many have become established members of Austrian society while maintaining close ties to the wider Tibetan diaspora in Europe.

Vienna serves as an important hub for Tibetan Buddhist culture in central Europe, home to several dharma centres offering teachings, retreats, and community gatherings. Tibetan children in Austria access language classes through community-organised weekend schools, and Austrian teachers were among those who participated in a major teacher training workshop hosted by the Office of Tibet in Geneva in 2025, attending alongside colleagues from Switzerland. Young Tibetan Austrians have been active participants in European Tibet advocacy in September 2025, a representative from Austria took part in the Tibetan Empowerment Days in Brussels, meeting with EU parliamentarians to raise awareness about the situation in Tibet. The Austrian Tibetan community observes all major cultural and religious celebrations, including Losar and Saga Dawa, and maintains active connections with Tibet support groups across Austria and the broader European network.
