Tibetan Events in South Africa

The Tibetan community in South Africa is small, but it has a meaningful cultural, spiritual, and humanitarian presence. The main official Tibetan institution is the Office of Tibet in Pretoria, which represents His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration in Africa. Opened in 1997 after approval from the South African government under Nelson Mandela, the office promotes Tibetan culture, religion, education, compassion, non-violence, interfaith harmony, and friendship between Tibetans and South Africans.

South Africa also has an active network of Tibet support groups, including Tibet Society of South Africa, South African Friends of Tibet, Tibet Rescue Initiative in Africa, and Tibet Support Group Cape Town. These groups raise awareness about Tibetan history, Buddhism, culture, human values, and the Tibetan people’s peaceful struggle.

The Tibet Society of South Africa, based in Durban/KwaZulu-Natal, was formed in 1995 and is described as the first Tibet Support Group in South Africa. South African Friends of Tibet (SAFT), formed around 2003, has also played an important role in connecting South Africans with Tibetan culture and values through public events, education, and peaceful solidarity activities. Together with Tibet Rescue Initiative in Africa and Tibet Support Group Cape Town, these organizations strengthen friendship through shared values of freedom, peace, compassion, and justice.

The Tibetan community in South Africa has received support from respected South African figures such as Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who valued the Dalai Lama’s message of peace, non-violence, and human dignity.
