The Tibetan Community in Spain

Spain is home to a small but vibrant Tibetan community, centred largely on Barcelona and the wider Catalonia region. The heart of community life is the Fundació Casa del Tibet (Tibet House) in Barcelona, founded in 1994 as a non-profit cultural and solidarity association and led by Ven. Thupten Wangchen, a long-serving community leader and former member of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile. The Dalai Lama advised the foundation’s creation and inaugurated its current headquarters in 2007. Together with the Tibetan Community Association of Spain, Casa del Tibet works to share Tibetan culture, language and Buddhist philosophy with the Spanish public, organising teachings, exhibitions, film screenings, Losar celebrations and charitable initiatives in support of Tibetan refugees. Beyond Barcelona, Tibetan Buddhism has put down deep roots across the country through several long-established retreat centres and monasteries.

Featured Monastery

Dag Shang Kagyü, in the village of Panillo in Huesca, Aragón, is one of Spain’s most important Tibetan Buddhist centres. Established in 1984 by H.Em. Kalu Rinpoche, it is built in a traditional Bhutanese style, crowned by a 17-metre stupa, and houses a translation school teaching Buddhist philosophy and the Tibetan language, along with facilities for long retreats. Following the non-sectarian Rimé approach, it welcomes practitioners of all traditions. Spain’s other major Tibetan centres include Sakya Tashi Ling, a Sakya-tradition monastery set in the Plana Novella palace within Garraf Natural Park near Barcelona, re-established in 1996; and O Sel Ling, an FPMT retreat centre high in the Alpujarra mountains of Granada, founded in 1980 by Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Thubten Zopa and named by the Dalai Lama during his 1982 visit.
