Belgium is home to approximately 5,000 Tibetans — one of the larger Tibetan communities in continental Europe — concentrated primarily in and around Brussels, with smaller groups in Ghent, Liège, and Antwerp. Tibetans began settling in Belgium in the 1980s and 1990s, drawn by its central location in Europe and its vibrant diaspora networks. The community has established deep roots while maintaining a proud connection to Tibetan identity and culture.
Brussels serves as the nerve centre of European politics, and Belgium’s Tibetans have leveraged this proximity to build strong advocacy relationships with the European Parliament. The Tibetan Community in Belgium organises regular Losar celebrations, cultural festivals, and political events, including annual March 10 Uprising Day gatherings that draw Tibetans from across Europe. Weekend Tibetan language classes are held for children and youth, ensuring the next generation grows up speaking, reading, and writing their mother tongue. Community elders and teachers volunteer their time to pass on traditional songs, dances, and Buddhist teachings.
Belgium is also home to several respected Tibetan Buddhist centres, offering meditation retreats and dharma teachings in the Kagyu, Nyingma, and Gelug traditions. The Tibetan community here is closely tied to broader European exile networks, frequently participating in pan-European gatherings, sports tournaments, and cultural exchanges. In a country celebrated for its multilingualism and openness, Belgium’s Tibetans have found a welcoming home while keeping their flame of identity burning bright.
The Bureau du Tibet (Office of Tibet) in Brussels serves as the official representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration to the European Union, the European Parliament, and other European institutions. It coordinates Tibet advocacy across Europe and serves as a hub for European-level Tibetan diplomatic and cultural activities.
Belgium hosts a vibrant calendar of Tibetan events from large Losar celebrations in Antwerp’s Tibetan community to Tibet advocacy events at the European Parliament in Brussels, dharma teachings, and cultural festivals.
