The Tibetan Community in Canada

Canada is home to approximately 9,350 Tibetans, making it the third-largest Tibetan diaspora community in the Western world. The vast majority live in and around Toronto, which has grown into one of the most vibrant Tibetan communities outside South Asia. Tibetans began arriving in Canada in the 1970s at the invitation of the Dalai Lama, with subsequent waves arriving through family reunification and resettlement programmes that transformed Toronto into a true home-away-from-home for the exile community. Additional communities thrive in Vancouver, Calgary, and Montreal.

At the centre of Canadian Tibetan life is the Tibetan Canadian Cultural Centre (TCCC) known as Gangjong Choedenling  the largest Tibetan cultural centre in North America, founded in 2007 on a 2.18-acre site in the Greater Toronto Area. Every Saturday, the TCCC runs seven levels of Tibetan language classes for children from kindergarten through grade five, taught by experienced teachers using a curriculum developed in consultation with the Central Tibetan Administration’s Department of Education. Performing arts song, dance, and traditional music are taught alongside language, creating a full cultural education programme. In February 2024, the Canadian federal government committed over $1.4 million to expand the TCCC’s facilities, recognising its vital role in the community.

The Regional Tibetan Youth Congress Toronto organises cultural and political events, while a network of Tibetan Buddhist centres  including Gaden Choling offers dharma teachings and meditation programmes year-round. Each spring, Toronto’s Tibetans host one of North America’s largest Losar celebrations, drawing thousands from across the diaspora. Canada’s multiculturalism policies and warm public support have made it one of the most welcoming countries for Tibetan refugees to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose.
